It is installed to secure wall tops, roof edges, ventilation shafts, windows, and both interior and exterior walls of varied types and materials.

The standard form has a single arm, but the system can also be constructed using a double arm (each at 45°) or with a simple fencepost extension.

In very sensitive applications, the topping can be made more secure with the addition of a barbed wire.
